Going fishing …

I have made the hard decision to leave Microsoft at the end of August/early Sept.

Deciding to move is never an easy decision to make and this time is no different for me. I absolutely love Office 365, working with developers and ISVs and the amazing team I have the fortune of running and working with every day. I am crazy proud of what we have achieved in the last year and half I have worked on the team and am very happy with the direction it’s going. I am more bullish than ever about Office 365 and in particular the opportunity around it.

So much so that I want to take part in it!

I’m extremely excited about the opportunity to build amazing software products and for that reason I am co-founding a brand new Kirkland based innovation lab, HyperFish, focused on taking ideas from inception through to fruition with the goal of making customers businesses run better in the cloud and with Office 365. You might wonder exactly what ideas and over time we will have more specific details to share around what we are building … so stay tuned for that!

I couldn’t be happier to be joining forces with Brian Cook, co-founder of Nintex, on this journey. Brian is an experienced entrepreneur and business leader who helped take Nintex from an idea to a company with over 5000 customers worldwide. Anyone who has spent any time around SharePoint will know about Nintex and the great products they make.

I’m very excited about the opportunities we have to dream up and build products that help businesses in the cloud. We are setting up shop in Kirkland WA on the shores of Lake Washington, so I won’t be moving out of the area.

I’m looking forward to the challenge!

Hola Microsoft

Back in November 2011 I said “Adios Microsoft” and left to start the US office for Provoke Solutions. I can’t believe it has been over two years since then.  Time has flown by!

Well all things come to and end and on the 10th of March I will rejoin Microsoft.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Provoke.  On Nov 1 2011 I literally unloaded a car full of things and set up myself in an office in Bellevue as employee #1.  We have achieved some amazing things since then and I am personally very proud what we accomplished. It’s been very personally rewarding, challenging and character building. Running a small business is hard, but a lot of fun all at the same time. I was fortunate enough of having the backing from our New Zealand based team so I never felt like it was just me.

But now I am ready for my next chapter.

I am heading back to a familiar but different team from my last stint at Microsoft, the Office 365 team. I will be leading a team to help to make Office 365 a great place for developers, software vendors (ISVs), development houses (“System Integrators”) and others to customize, extend and build software for Office 365 and constituent products on-premises.

This opportunity was too good to pass up.  The chance to work on the worlds #1 leading productivity software and to help take developers and ISVs along for the ride! Couple that with a unique time in computing history as the paradigm shift of cloud computing takes hold and it makes for a very unique opportunity that I couldn’t resist.

They had me at “helping developers”.

The current story for developers building for the cloud in 365 is only in its infancy and I am very much looking forward to being involved and helping as much as I can.

I know lots of people out in the community, the SharePoint community especially, who are very passionate and vocal about the issues they are facing with development for Office 365 today.  I know fully well what many of the issues are, however, as always, I look forward to talking with as many people as I can and working on these issues together.  It needs to be a collaborative effort and it wont happen over night.  But it will happen.

I am really looking forward to the SharePoint Conference in Vegas next week!

I’m looking for more peeps…

I’m on the hunt for an awesome person who also happens to code on the Microsoft Stack really well.

I know I’m a SharePoint guy … but this person doesn’t need to be!

First up here is the place to apply: LinkedIn

In a nutshell we are looking for fun people who enjoy building stuff on the Microsoft Stack.  ASP.Net, Azure, SharePoint, Windows Phone, MVC3 or 4, Web API … you name it.

You need to be good at working stuff out, enjoy a challenging projects, clients & timelines (from time to time) … and have a pet project you work on at home in your spare time that you can show us.

This will be your view of Bellevue when you choose to come into the office:

Come and work for us!

We are hiring…

We are starting the hunt for our first Seattle/Bellevue based staff.  The first role we are posting is for passionate developers who know their way around the MS development stack.

Here are the details…

[Update: here is the official posting on the Provoke site:]

  • Mandatory: C#, ASP.Net, WCF/Web Services, HTML, CSS, JavaScript/JQuery, XML, MS-SQL
  • Bonus Points: SharePoint, Windows Phone, Mobile Web toolkits like Sencha Touch/Kendo UI

In order to deliver the high quality of standard required you will have a minimum of two years’ experience in a software developer position (or the temperament and ability to show us you are a rockstar regardless).

You will have strong problem solving skills, the ability to multi-task projects, and have a good understanding of standard systems development lifecycle processes in order to apply Provoke’s methodology effectively on project engagements.

Provoke offers excellent pay (base and bonus package), exceptional benefits (including medical, dental, vision, PTO) and perks. Being a multi-national company with offices in exotic locations such as New Zealand travel is also a possibility.
